Watercolor Techniques Wednesday

Big Shot/ Stamping/ Tips, Tricks, & Techniques/ Videos

Hey stampers! Today is Watercolor Techniques Wednesday here on the blog. There are so many different ways to use plain old water with various Stampin' Up! products to create some fun and unique looks!

My first project uses a new stamp set, Floral Statements. This stamp set is available in both wood and clear mount and gives you so many options for coloring. Today's card uses Daffodil Delight, Old Olive, and Fresh Fig, one of our new 2017-2019 In Colors. The color combo is something I've never used before. It's fun to try “out of the box” color combinations to create totally new looks to your stamping every once in awhile.

Supplies:

  • Stamp SetsFloral Statements wood #143738, Clear 144701
  • Card Stock – Watercolor Paper 122959; Fresh Fig 144242; Daffodil Delight 119683
  • Stamp Pads – Fresh Fig 144082; Daffodil Delight 131173; Old Olive 126953
  • Misc. –Seasonal Layers Thinlits 143751; Aqua Painter 103954; Snail 104332

Measurements:

  • Daffodil Delight 8½ x 5½
  • Fresh Fig 5 x 3¼; 5½ x 1
  • Watercolor 4¾ x 3

Instructions:

  1. Daffodil Delight score at 5½
  2. Place the scallop edge from Seasonal Layers about ½ at the bottom on the daffodil delight card stock and cut out pass through the big shot. Fold at the score line.
  3. Place the scallop edge from Seasonal Layers about ½ at the edge of the card strip of the Fresh Fig card stock and cut out pass through the big shot.
  4. Place the scallop Fresh Fig at the bottom inside of the Daffodil Delight and ONLY apply snail in the back of the daffodil delight scallop and close to adhere to the fresh fig.
  5. Stamp the Hello using Fresh Fig onto the watercolor paper.
  6. Using the aqua painter to color ***very gentle on the water and barely touch the brush into the paper so it will not bleed the color. You will have some bleeding but little if using little water and NOT pressing hard the aqua painter.
  7. Flower color with Daffodil Delight and outline with Crushed Curry, leaves color using Old Olive and Hello Fresh Fig.
  8. Adhere into the Fresh Fig card stock and center of card front.

If you want to try this card for yourself, just click on any picture to order your supplies.

One of the many perks of being a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator is all the support from our Corporate Office. There are so many wonderful trainers who are always sharing their tips and techniques with us, often in videos. I've selected a few short ones for you to watch today…enjoy!

Aren't these techniques cool?  When I first started stamping I shied away from doing anything that involved water. As I practiced  and became more familiar with all the different tools for watercoloring, I started incorporating water into more of my projects. I hope these Watercolor Techniques Wednesday videos will inspire you, too!

Happy Birthday E B White – This Little Piggy meets Wilbur

Paper crafting/ Samples/ Stamping

I have another This Little Piggy sample for you today in honor of the birthday of E.B. White, creator of the Children's Classic, Charlotte's Web. Elwyn Brooks “E. B.” White was born on July 11, 1899, and, in addition to Charlotte's Web, he was also the creator of Stuart Little.

I think this little piggy looks quite like Wilbur, Charlotte's friend in the book, with a little mud added in for good measure. 🙂

I always wondered the “back story” to Charlotte's Web so I did a little bit of research.  White had married a co-worker at New Yorker Magazine in 1929 and by the end of the 1930s, White and his family were spending most of their time at their Maine farmhouse. One day, White spotted a spider spinning an egg sac in his barn in Maine. This encounter provided the inspiration for what is perhaps his most beloved work, Charlotte's Web (1952), about the friendship between a spider named Charlotte and Wilbur the pig.

Here are the instructions for today's little piggy card…enjoy!

Supplies:

  • Stamp SetsThis Little Piggy (143922 c), (143919 w), One Big Meaning (138788 w), (139420 c)

  • Whisper White:  4 1/4” x 11”, scored at 5 ½”; 2 1/8” square
  • Basic Black: 2 ¼” x 2 ¼”
  • Blushing Bride:  2” square

Instructions:

  1. Fold Whisper White cardstock in half to create card.
  2. Stamp the piggy with Archival Black ink onto the Blushing Bride  cardstock and cut out with Paper Snips.
  3. Use the Aqua Painter and Blushing Bride ink to add some color to the piggy ears, cheeks, nose and tail.
  4. Using the fine tip end of the Stampin’ Write Marker, outline several areas of the pig to create spots.  Use the brush tip of the marker and fill in the spots with color.
  5. Attach the piggy to the Whisper White square, and layer onto the Basic Black square with Dimensionals.
  6. Tie a bow with the Baker’s Twine and attach with a glue dot.
