Now, be honest, how many of you even KNEW there was such a thing as National Craft Month?!
I know spring break is just around the corner for many of you with school age children so here are some ideas to help them pass the time AND have some quality family, crafting time!
Preschool activity (this would be fun to do on March 17 for St. Patrick's Day):
Create a cereal rainbow using fruit flavored cereal in the shape of little circles (like Fruit
Loops): Take a paper plate and cut in half; separate the cereal by color (you can even count each color to get in a little bit of math-hey, what can I say-that's the teacher in me!), glue cereal by color onto the plate, following the curve of the plate…voila, you will have a cereal rainbow. This will take approximately 30 minutes to dry.
Kindergarten activity Handprint Card: Paint the palm of the hand you want to print, using some water based paint. Press the painted hand onto a piece of construction paper, printer paper or card stock. Print out this little poem and attach to the card. Your child will beam at the completed project and mom, dad, or grandparents will LOVE to receive it!.
My Handprint
Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints
On furniture and walls
But everyday I'm growing big
And soon I'll be very tall
Then all my little hand prints
Will be hard to recall
So here's a special hand print
Just so that you can say
this is how my fingers looked
when I placed them here today.
(have the child sign and date-or do for them depending on age).
Elementary activity Toilet Paper Roll Puppets: you will need some toilet paper rolls, popsicle or other craft sticks, scissors, glue, construction paper, yarn, googlie eyes, felt, fabric, etc.). Decorate the cardboard toilet paper rolls to make different people or
animals. You can cut the rolls to make different heights or even using paper towel rolls. Use the other
supplies to make hair, clothes, eyes, etc. Glue the sticks inside the bottom edge of the cardboard roll for puppet handle. Kids can even make up a puppet show to do after the puppets are all created!
