Glitter Bomb – Scrapbooking in New Orleans

Contests/ People/ Scrapbook

Hello Stampers from wet and rainy Texas! My goodness I love the rain as much as anyone but…I think we've had enough for awhile! The ground needs to get a bit of a chance to dry out. I'm going on a stamping and scrapbooking retreat and it would be really nice to have a little sun, especially as we are all unloading our “stuff”! 🙂

Speaking of scrapbooking, have you been introduced to the New Orleans Scrapbooking mystery series by Laura Childs? If not, I highly recommend these books! Her latest one, Glitter Bomb, continues the adventures of Carmela Bertrand, scrapbook store owner and amateur sleuth.

Glitter Bomb - Scrapbooking in New Orleans

Glitter is a staple in my crafting vortex and, as a matter of fact, my home always has a trail of it leading out of my craft room. Yours, too? 🙂

Be sure you are on my mailing list (you can subscribe above) by next Tuesday. I'll be announcing a contest that you won't want to miss! HINT: it involves GLITTER!!

A Moment Of Reflection As A Brave Officer Is Laid To Rest

People

Hello stampers! I hope you will indulge me today to diverge a bit from my usual crafty oriented blog posts. Today a wonderful man was laid to rest, Officer David Sherrard. He and his family are part of the neighborhood community in which my husband Dave and I live. This brave police officer was gunned down answering a 911 call a week ago.

A Moment Of Reflection As A Brave Officer Is Laid To Rest

As I watched the Livestream of his funeral at a local church, I reflected on many things and I wanted to share them with you.

First, his faith was at the top of his priorities each and every day. Every speaker at his funeral talked about how he lived out his faith in his community, at work, and, most importantly, at home with his family. He was passing on something so valuable to the next generation.  As I watched person after person speak, I reflected on if my faith is obvious to those who know me well and also to those strangers with whom I interact each day. I hope so.

Second, none of us know if today might be our last so we need to cherish each and every day and be sure those near to us truly know of our love for them. The love David felt for his family came through so strong with each and every speaker. Not a one left the podium without mentioning of his deep love for his wife and his two girls. What a legacy he left. Do we do that? I hope so.

Finally, David Sherrard was quite a prankster and possessed a happy spirit. Joy exuded from this man and his sense of humor, no doubt, got him through many dark days as a police officer. Is joy flowing abundantly from us? I hope so.

This family and extended family had their lives changed forever in a blink of an eye. They will not have David's physical presence with them as they struggle to put their lives back together following this deep loss. But, I daresay, he will be present in their hearts and they will treasure the memories of his faith, his love, and his joy.

I pray all of us will live our lives as David did, finding joy each day, in the hard things as well as the happy times.

Thank you for the joy all of you bring into my life and I hope I am in some small way able to bring that to you as well! God bless! 🙂

Remember Fallen Heroes With Loyal & True

Holidays / Special Days/ People/ Projects

Hey Stampers! Today is a sobering day; it doesn't seem possible 16 years have passed since the horrible events of September 11, 2001. Today I wanted to remember fallen heroes with Loyal & True sample.

Remember Fallen Heroes With Loyal & True

This card was made by my friend Karen Finkle, who is a demonstrator in N. Ft. Myers, Florida. Karen's husband, Perry, valiantly served in Vietnam and is currently battling cancer. This sweet couple has sacrificed so much and I wanted to publicly thank them and showcase some of Karen's work. (side note: they are directly in the path of Hurricane Irma and can't evacuate because of Perry's treatment; they would appreciate your prayers).

Grateful doesn't begin to say enough of how thankful I am to live here. I thank God every day for the men and women who faithfully serve whether in our military at home and around the world, or as first responders who selflessly act in emergencies, such as the horrific events of 9/11. My husband worked as a paramedic for years and was first on the scene to many accidents and other emergencies. We vividly remember living through the October 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in California; he running calls and me at home with the kids.

So, please join me today in thanking someone you know who faithfully serves. And, I thought it would be appropriate to include this wonderful song by Lee Greenwood.

Thanks for stopping by today and helping me to Remember Fallen Heroes With Loyal & True. I'll see you tomorrow with a Double Embossing Technique Dragonfly Dreams sample!

Sharing Sweet Thoughts

Die Cut/ Paper crafting/ People/ Projects

Happy Friday stampers! I love the name of the stamp set for today's project; Sharing Sweet Thoughts. If you turn your 2017-2018 catalog to page 223, you'll find this cute set.

I think the images in this stamp set are adorable. Beyond that, it is the Ronald McDonald House Charities set for 2017-2018, so that makes it especially near and dear to me. Each time the Sharing Sweet Thoughts stamp set is purchased, $3.00 is donated by Stampin' Up! to the RMCD Charities. To date, $1.5 million dollars has been donated. I am beyond proud to be associated with such a philanthropic-minded company!

I love the simplicity of this card. The small touches of black really set off the Pear Pizzazz.

Something else to note, there is another product, Everyday Jar Framelits,  that coordinates perfectly with this stamp set. In fact, the Everyday Jar Framelits has coordinated with quite a few stamp sets, making it “more stamp-ING for less cha-CHING! 🙂

I'll share the products and measurements used for this card below and a link to our Artisan Blog Hop. I hope after seeing my project and all the ideas at the blog hop, you might consider adding this stamp set, and maybe even the framelits to your collection. The Stubby Crayons of Life

People

Hey stampers! I hope the title of this post drew you in! Today, I'm not posting about anything “crafty”, showing you any cool projects or products. I wanted to share another part of my life, one of which you might not be aware. First, let me share the photo that serves as the inspiration for this post.

Yep…one little stubby crayon and a knife-sharpened pencil drew me in. My friends are currently serving as missionaries with AboutFace Missions in Kenya. They, and their six children, sold everything they owned last year in November and boarded a LONG flight that would take them to their future home where they would begin their ministry to orphans in Kenya. To read more of their story here is one of Stephanie's blog posts:

My Selfish Post

When I saw this picture, something started rattling around in my mind. As a teacher, parent, and now grandparent, how many times had I told a child to throw away a stubby crayon or worn down pencil. I couldn't imagine a tiny hand using a stub and actually having legible penmanship.

But, as I started to think more about this I felt my heart stirring for these children who had no full-sized pencils or crayons and I wanted to do more than just shake my head or pray. A friend at work and I went and bought crayons and pencils and packed them up to ship off to Kenya. I'm hoping when our box arrives, the children will be excited.

That's all well and good, but now to the real point of this post. We all have what I'll call “stubby crayons” of life. You know, the experiences that bring us up short, curves in our life road that take us places we never thought we'd be, or ways that we've gotten the “short end of the stick”…or pencil as the case may be! 🙂

These things can actually be a blessing if we let them. Just like this picture shows, these kids used every last part of the crayon and pencil because that's all they had. The funny thing is…their little faces are full of such joy ; they don't even know they are missing new crayons and pencils.

Sometimes we just need to “be in the moment” and not think about what we are missing or what we don't have. Let God change and teach us through our” stubby crayons of life” moments.

Come back tomorrow and I'll have some new samples to share with you!

Did You Know….

Paper crafting/ People

that today, in 1955, Steve Jobs was born? I bet all of you use or have used an Apple product at some point. Think about how different things would be had Mr. Jobs not made it into the world; also sad that he passed at such a young age.

I worked for Adobe Systems for almost 10 years when we lived in California; I was actually employee #20! I was around when Adobe and Apple were beginning their relationship in the Silicon Valley. I actually met Steve Jobs…very exciting times! I also was able to purchase one of the very first Macintosh computers and my brother used it to write his doctoral dissertation. See….I'm not just a crafting expert; I'm actually semi-famous….ha!

Seriously though, your computer can really help you when it comes to designing your cards and maybe even scrapbook layouts. Take for instance, this sketch and finished card:

card sketchcard sketchpic

Imagine if we had no computers with which to design, manipulate, and share our projects? The world would be missing a LOT of happy don't you think?

So, I for one am thankful that Steve Jobs (along with his partner, Steve Wozniak) was the creative genius behind Apple!

On This Day…

Holidays / Special Days/ Paper crafting/ People

On this day in 1866, writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter was born. Following the success of her little book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix bought this farmhouse, Hill Top in Cumbria.

Beatrix Potter

How many of us were read this book as a child and have continued the tradition with our kids and grandkids.

I see at least 6 Stampin' Up! colors in this photo…which ones do you see???

P.S. …and wouldn't you love to have this little cottage for a crafting getaway retreat???

Delightful Doodling aka Zentangle

Paper crafting/ People

From time to time I like to blog about my friends. I have a dear friend who moved to Virginia so her husband could attend Medical School there. He is an Engineer and decided to switch careers…quite impressive I think!

Tracy and I used to stamp together and she would design one of a kind handmade cards for friends' businesses and such.

She sent me a text with a couple samples of these beautiful notecards she created for Mother's Day gifts. I think they are absolutely gorgeous; she gave me permission to share and give her contact information. I told her she needs to get her Etsy store going again….don't you agree??

TracyM1TracyM2

They are 5″ x 7″ and she would be glad to create some for you.

Today Is National Hat Day!

People/ Uncategorized

Okay…I must come clean. I have never been a hat lover, but lately I have spent a lot more time under one of two ball caps…a Stampin' Up!  logo cap that I purchased at Convention years ago or a Dallas Cowboys one.

In days gone by, hats were an indicator of social status (hmmmm, perhaps this is why “anyone who is anyone”  in England, wears a hat to  all social functions and important events. Seriously, have you ever seen the Queen without her head covered when she is out in public????) and hats would also identify branch of services, rank or regiment in different armed forces.

I spent some time perusing the Internet and stumbled across some interesting hat info…you should google “hats” just for a laugh!

Now…onto something fun. If you had to pick one of these hats, which would you pick and why? I would definitely pick the first one…it seems casual and could easily hide a bad hair day! 🙂

Wedding Car Cans

People/ Projects

My daughter and her friend were in a big wedding a couple of weeks ago. Each bridesmaid had to decorate a can for the back of the newlywed “getaway” car. Of course, Ashley asked if they could come over and use my “stuff” and of course, I said yes! I thought…woo hoo…another chance to draw them into my stamping vortex!!

By the way…YES, their cans WERE the best!! 🙂

Sunrise

FijiSunrise_Dk_1000

Dave here…

This is what we woke up to yesterday.  We got up and ran outside about 15 minutes before sunrise and wandered down the beach taking pictures.  Utterly relaxing!  Things like this make me stop and think of all that we have to be thankful for.  It took some work to get here, but at a time like this every bit of it is worthwhile.

When Anne started her business 10+ years ago, I thought, “Hmm, cardmaking and socializing with some of her friends.  That'll be a nice hobby for her.”  I never had a CLUE that she'd soon be taking me on fabulous trips and vacations.  I had no idea of what potential there is in this little stamping and scrapbooking business.  Now I do.

We both would sure like to have you come with us on the next trip.  It's entirely possible and you could be here too!  Ask us how…

Wanted to share a handmade card by my talented customer Maria. We had a workshop a couple  of weeks ago and she fell in love with the Swallowtail Stamp. As we head off to Fiji, not sure how our Internet access will be so wanted to leave you with a beauty!

If you don't follow me on Facebook, please go to facebook.com/stampmaven and like my page. Then check back during the week since that's where we'll hopefully be able to share pictures and other fun things while we are on the Stampin' Up! Incentive trip to Fiji. We are so excited…this truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Who knows…we may even find some unusual butterflies for Maria to recreate when we get home!

I Love This Little Freckle-Faced Birthday Girl!

Holidays / Special Days/ People

It seems like just yesterday our granddaughter, Samantha Anne, came into the world.
Her first night was spent in the NICU at Medical Center of Plano, but
she has developed into the most adorable, freckle-faced 8 year old I
know and I love her dearly.

Sammy turns 8 years old today and yesterday, her aunt, my daughter Ashley, and I took her to a day of rock climbing, games and a buffet filled with all sorts of kid friendly treats! Wanted to share some pictures from our day of fun!

One of the reasons I love my Stampin' Up! business so much is that it gives me
the ability to do special things like this for and with my kids and grandkids.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing a bit of our fun! Be sure to sign up for my email newsletter (top of the post in the box on the left-hand side) to get all my projects, tips & techniques, tutorials, and other fun stuff I share each month!
