Scrapbooking For Dummies

Big Shot/ Classes / Events/ Die Cut/ Scrapbook/ Tips, Tricks, & Techniques

Now, I am not really calling anyone a dummy; but, I'm sure you've seen all those __________________For Dummies books at the bookstore. Sometimes I really do think we need a book like that for scrapbooking! A couple of weeks ago, I was teaching a class to some high school seniors and I had been asked to create some pages they could easily duplicate. I'm going to be sharing these pages over the next few days.

I wanted the first page to be one that anyone could do, even if they were brand new to the crafting world; hence, my post title! I did have a couple of newbies, so I'm glad I had something that would make them feel successful right off the bat.

I used colors from the Brights Collection and pre-cut the large squares. All they had to do for the background was to pick the four colors that most appealed to them. Next, they chose coordinating solid colors to run through the Big Shot Die Cutting Machine to create their photo “mats”.  The librarian hosting the class wanted bright, springlike pages. Using the Floral Framelits made it so easy and the girls loved it!

Lastly, they needed a place for journaling. I had some cards left over from some other projects so I spread them all out and let the girls choose. Everyone got the little word bubble clip, so they didn't even need adhesive for this part.

My favorite thing about getting together with these girls was returning to the basics and remembering back how it was when I first started scrapbooking and didn't have too many products. I still wanted to create fun pages. Of course, as we continue to create our pages, our style changes and that is fabulous, too. A hobby for anyone and everyone!

Tomorrow I'll share the next page…..be sure to come back!

Quick Tuesday Tip – Embossing Buddy

Scrapbook/ Tips, Tricks, & Techniques

The Embossing Buddy (103083) is a small bag of powder that is essential for heat embossing. Rubbing the surface of your cardstock with the “buddy” helps to reduce static electricity and also removes any oils that may have been left on the card stock .

embossingbuddypic

BUT,  here's another tip for this tool. If you use SNAIL Adhesive on the back of ribbon you're using on a project, it is a bit difficult to apply the adhesive without some hanging over the edge, especially on narrower ribbon. When this happens, your card becomes sticky, which is not good. Try rubbing (gently) the Embossing Buddy over the unwanted adhesive…problem solved!

This will also work if you are a bit heavy-handed when applying adhesive to a card layer and you want to remove it from around the edges of your card project or scrapbook page.

It’s Finally Finished!

Big Shot/ Die Cut/ Projects/ Scrapbook

I've been working on my cover for the mini album page swap with my monthly group and it is finally finished! I am so happy with the way it turned out.

Click for full image

I used the Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper, one of the free Sale-A-Bration choices. If you click on the link, you can go to my site and download a copy. Every once in awhile, Stampin' Up! will put a Sale-A-Bration item in the next big catalog….I am hoping this paper will be one of those. I absolutely love it!

I used the Spiral Flower Originals Die for all the three dimensional “blooms” on the cover. You can make these flowers by punching out a circle of your choice and then using paper snips to cut out a spiral piece that you can then form into the flower. But, this die makes the process SO much easier!! I've put a short video link below that you can watch to learn all about this fun, new die.

Puppy Love Valentine Punch Art

Die Cut/ Holidays / Special Days/ Punch Art/ Scrapbook

I saw this cute little project on a craft website last week….of course I had to try using Stampin' Up! products and changing to make it my own…can't just totally CASE!! I was doing a class at the library in Howe, TX and all the girls, ages 10 to senior in high school and their moms, seemed to enjoy this project.

We've set a date and I'll be teaching them some scrapbooking techniques for their “senior” scrapbooks. The evening will culminate with each of them doing 4 pages I am bringing. If you live near the area and have a high school senior who might enjoy (Howe, Sherman, Pottsboro, Dennison, etc), please give me a shout and I'll give you the details. We'd love to have your senior join us…the more the merrier in our crafting vortex!

puppy love punch art

Now, back to this project. I used the Hearts Collection Framelits for the puppy's body, feet, ears, nose and red glitter “heart”. The accenting on ears and feet is done with White Stampin' Chalk Marker. Card base is Strawberry Slush 8-1/2″ x 11″ Cardstock, body, ears and feet are done with Baked Brown Sugar 8-1/2″ x 11″ Cardstock, nose is Basic Black scrap and heart is scrap of Red Glimmer Paper. I drew in eyes with Black marker.

Come back tomorrow and I'll show you a VERY easy Valentine note card made with 1/2″ circles.

Tips For Using Fringe Scissors

Scrapbook/ Stamping/ Tips, Tricks, & Techniques

If you haven't quite mastered the technique of using the new fringe scissors, here are a couple of tips:

1. Be sure to use the middle of the blades (instead of going all the way in near the scissor handles); this will give you a much cleaner cut.

2. If you are having a hard time cutting your fringe in a straight line, use a ruler to draw a line on the back of your cardstock, and then use as a guide while cutting. Your “grass” or “fringe” will line up perfectly!

3. If you don't like the look of the fringe, try putting a piece of scotch tape on the back of your paper so that when you are cutting, you are cutting through the tape and the cardstock. You will get a different look.

Gorgeous Goblins

Holidays / Special Days/ Product Information/ Scrapbook/ Uncategorized

I love the faces on my friend Dee Ann's kids! Her son Gabriel was NOT happy in this picture and it surely shows. Good thing his sisters are such beauties!

Our Witches' Brew Designer Series Paper (132185) has so many Halloween themed sheets to make scrapbooking this year's (or past years that might still be laying around in a box!) pictures easy peasy!

This particular sheet has very few embellishments added because the background of the paper itself does most of the work. I think the Washi Tape adds a lot and all you have to do is tear off small pieces and stick on your pages.

See you tomorrow for my next project…hope this week of Halloween ideas is helping you get your Halloween Mojo going!

Gratitude

Contests/ Holidays / Special Days/ Scrapbook

I had the best time with some awesome “crafty” friends this past weekend. The BEST part is I finished every project I took along with me AND I didn't take my entire craft room…woo hoo! I am so grateful when I get to go away and spend time with old friends and new ones I just met.

Speaking of grateful, I think this project would be so wonderful to make ahead of time for every guest coming to Thanksgiving dinner…OK, I know it is only August, but if you procrastinate like I do it's NOT too early to start getting your holiday ideas together!

Quick Journal Project

Paper crafting/ Projects/ Scrapbook/ Stamping/ Videos

Today's project is a fun journal that has many different uses: as a “happy” to encourage a friend, to show a favorite teacher that she is appreciated, to say thank you to a special hostess or customer, or…??? The one I'm showing you today is a prayer journal for one of my stamp club hostesses.

Dave, the Stamp Slave, has made a short video to show you how to create some of the pieces of this project. If you're not a subscriber to my newsletter, be sure to sign up before Wednesday, by putting your info in the coral colored circle on the right-hand side of this page. We give our subscribers exclusive content and this week's mid month newsletter will include a link to a short video where I'll show how to create the little rose embellishment on the front of this journal.

If you have any questions while you're putting together your journal, please feel free to post a comment and I'll get right back to you.

Mini Brag Book – “How To”

Paper crafting/ Projects/ Scrapbook/ Stamping

Here are the instructions for Mini Brag Book (you can see pictures on Monday, June 10th's post) I promised. This comes together very quickly and has so many fun uses; here are a few:

  1. add a few pictures and journaling to record memories from a fun event
  2. make an autograph book for kids to take to summer camp
  3. fill with favorite Scripture and give to a friend who needs encouragement
  4. ??? – leave me a comment with your ideas!

SUPPLIES:
Stamps: Embellished Events (131984-W, 126497-C)
Ink: Baked Brown Sugar Classic Stampin’ Pad (131174)
Paper: Whisper White Card Stock (100730), 2013-2015 In Color Paper Stack (130136) and solid card stock to match whichever color you choose.
Tools & Accessories: Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine (113439), Top Note Bigz Die (113463), Hung Up Cute Clips (129389), Artisan Label Punch (130920), Multipurpose Liquid Glue (110755), SNAIL Adhesive (104332), Stampin’ Dimensionals (104430), Stampin’ Sponges (101610) binder rings, chipboard, hole punch or Crop-A-Dile

INSTRUCTIONS
:
1. Using the Top Note Die and the Big Shot:
a. Cut a front and back cover for the brag book out of chipboard (the back piece in a DSP      pack works well)
b. Cut a designer series paper (DSP) cover for the front and back
c. Cut the inside pages (4-6 work well) with Whisper White card stock
2. Adhere the DSP to the front and back cover of the brag book chipboard using liquid glue.  Adhere the coordinating solid color to other side of each cover. Sponge edges if desired.
3. Stamp the sentiment of your choice (I used “celebrate” with Baked Brown ink onto a piece of the DSP used for cover). Punch out with the Artisan Label punch. Cut a small piece of matching Ruffled Ribbon and adhere to the sentiment piece using SNAIL adhesive. Choose a mini clip and slide onto this piece. Adhere to front cover with 2 Dimensionals. (You can also stamp your greeting onto Whisper White card stock, punch out with the Artisan Label punch, and then punch a piece of DSP with the decorative Label punch and cut in half. Adhere each half to the back of the stamped white piece for a little different look).
4.Using a large hold punch or Crop-A-Dile, punch two holes through the front & back cover, as well as the inside pages and hold together with binder. You can decorate the rings with ribbon or just leave plain.

Extra “finishing” ideas:

I created pockets for 2 of the inside pages by using Top Note Die and a 5” x 4” piece of coordinating DSP. Cut the Tope Note piece in half and glue to the white page to form a pocket. I then used a piece of Baked Brown Sugar card stock, cut to 3 ¼” x 2” and corner rounded the edges. Then use SNAIL to adhere a piece of Whisper White card stock cut to 3 1/8” x 1 7/8” with edges corner-rounded. Use a stapler to attach a small piece of coordinating ruffled ribbon. This can be a journaling tag.

I used the “Remember This and That Rotary Stamp” (130133) to add some fun touches to the inside pages.

Any questions just give me shout!
