How to Use the Spotlight Technique to Make a Beautiful DIY Card

It's National Bird Day! Who knew there even WAS such a thing!  In honor of this holiday I'm using a few fine feathered friends. Today's card will show you how to use the spotlight technique to make a beautiful DIY card. My project uses the Free as a Bird Stamp Set which you can find in the Stampin' Up!® Annual Catalog.

I love to color so Stampin' Blends are the perfect tool to use, especially when creating using the spotlighting technique.

I've included all the supplies, measurements and instructions to teach you how to use the spotlight technique to create this card.  Some retired products are used and don't stress about that! I'm sure you have your own products you can sub in to create your own beautiful DIY card! My goal is to just give you some new ideas to inspire you here on my blog. This method is one of the easiest ways to use the spotlight technique.

Supplies:

  • Stamp SetsFree as a Bird Bundle (151123)
  • Card Stock – Crumb Cake (120953); Calypso Coral (122925); Basic White (159276); Bird Ballad Designer Series Paper (149592) – retired product – you can use and DSP OR stamp flowers and leaves and then color using Stampin' Blends.
  • Stamp Pads – Memento Tuxedo Black (132708); Calypso Coral (147101)
  • Misc. – Stampin’ Blends Old Olive Combo (144597); Stampin Blends Daffodil Delight Combo (144603); Stampin Blends Daffodil Delight Combo (144603); Stampin Blends Calypso Coral Combo (144045); Stampin Blends Crumb Cake Combo (144601); Stampin Blends Pool Party Combo (144605); ⅝” Burlap Ribbon (141487) – retired product – substitute ribbon you already own; Stampin’ Dimensionals (104430); Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals (144108); Snail Adhesive (104332); Tear & Tape Adhesive (138995); Paper Snips (103579) Die-Cutting Machine

Measurements:

  • Crumb Cake: 5 ½” x 8 ½” scored at 4 ¼”
  • Calypso Coral: 4” x 5 ¼”
  • Whisper White: 3 ¾” x 5” AND scraps
  • Designer Series Paper: 1 ½” x 5”

Instructions:

  1. Stamp birds onto Whisper White cardstock near the top using Memento black ink. Stamp again on to scrap paper to color.
  2. Use Stampin’ Blends to color middle two birds, flowers and leaves. Cut out coloued portion using Paper Snips and adhere to white layer with Stampin' Dimensionals and Mini Dimensionals.
  3. Adhere Designer Series Paper to bottom of the  white layer using Tear & Tape. Adhere to Calyspo Coral layer.
  4. Tie ribbon in a knot, then adhere ends of ribbon to the backside of the two layers using Tear & Tape or a piece of regular tape. Adhere all layers to Crumb Cake card.
  5. Stamp greeting on scrap paper using Calypso Coral ink.
  6. Use a die cutting machine with Stitched Nested Label Dies (1 ⅛” x 2 ¼”) to cut out greeting then add to card using Stampin' Dimensionals.
