Mardi Gras Fun Facts

Yep, today is Mardi Gras and I'm sure my Louisiana friends have their gumbos cooking and their celebrations will soon be in full swing!

In case you were ever wondering why the colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold, I have the answer! Rex, the King of Mardi Gras, chose the official colors in 1872 and all three colors have their own meaning: purple represents justice; green is for faith,  and gold represents power.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which starts on Ash Wednesday.

Enjoy your Mardi Gras celebrations!
